WHAT IS MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH TO THERAPY?
I believe that there needs to be a collaborative relationship between the therapist and the client; an integrated understanding of the client’s world, and the enhancement of prevention and health promotion.
Counselling is a way of helping yourself by talking about your worries and problems. The emphasis is always on you being in control of what is discussed and the way in which sessions develop. The mode of counselling can be short-term, even as short as a one-off session, or longer term over a period of weeks or months. It is generally specific to a particular problem area which you are experiencing.
Counselling is different from talking with a friend or relative because, as your counsellor, I am an impartial professional who will not tell you or advise you what to do and who will not judge you or anything you say in a therapy session. I will help you to see your thoughts and feelings more clearly and to make choices and changes which suit you as an individual. You may experience a whole range of emotions during therapy – depression, sadness, tears, distress, fear, anger or even happiness and satisfaction. Whatever you are feeling, I will be there to support you and help you to cope in the way that suits you best.
Originally trained in the person-centred philosophy, I continue to work with clients in a humanistic, non-directive way in order to meet the needs of each individual. The underlying essence to my counselling approach involves demonstrating empathy, being non-judgemental and using unconditional positive regard. My main therapy goal is to release the client from any emotional distress, mental confusion and/or limiting beliefs. As a Person centred counsellor I try to arm the client with the opportunity to become more self-aware, and more in control of creating the sort of positive change they want to see in their life. I believe that the development of trust and understanding within this counsellor/client relationship encourages self-realisation, and enables the client to acknowledge the problems and issues they are disclosing, and to think up solutions, with gentle encouragement and guidance from the counsellor.
